IMechE Population Challenge

An Atkins team of young engineers and management consultants recently found success in taking third place at the finals of the IMechE Population Challenge, an international competition which challenged young engineers to come up with ways of mitigating the effects of a growing global population. The team led by Tanya Galliara (Atkins UK, Energy) and consisting of Nusda Loprasert (Atkins USA, Energy), Said Al-Busaidi (Atkins Middle East, Oman), Abhinav Sultania (Atkins USA, Energy) and Martin Chick (Atkins UK, Management Consultants) started the competition way back in May when they had to produce a two page initial outline of their solution – investigating how innovative transport solutions could reduce the impact of a growing population in the USA.

After successfully reaching the next round the team produced a twenty page technical report on their solution, accompanied by a one side non technical summary. Along with four other teams from Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago and Hong Kong the Atkins team reached the final and had to give a short presentation on their solution at the Houses of Parliament.

After a tough final with all the teams showing strong performances Atkins were announced as third place winners. The result is a particularly pleasing one for the team who are based in a number of different global locations, and hadn’t actually met in person until the final, adding a real challenge to producing the reports and presentation.

The team are now looking at how their solution can be progressed and are in discussion with a member of the judging panel.
