The core of the Society's activities is its regular lecture series, where leading figures from the railway industry and related engineering disciplines give detailed and informative presentations on many aspects of topical and general interest to the railway engineering community.  These lectures, starting at 7pm, are held in the Main Lecture Hall of the Derby Conference Centre, on London Road, Derby, shown in the accompanying photograph.  The building is also the Catalis Training Centre and was formally known as the College of Railway Technology.  There is ample opportunity to relax before and after the meeting in the comfortable bar, to mingle with the speakers and other members.

The lectures are complemented by a series of visits to sites of railway engineering interest, in the UK and abroad, so that members may further familiarise themselves with what goes on "on the ground".  Finally, there are various social events, the highlight of which is the Annual Dinner, at which members have enjoyed the warm welcome and excellent food of Derby's Midland Hotel for many years. The guest speakers at these events have included many prominent heads of business in the railway industry, usually accompanied by the Mayor of Derby.
