The Annual Alstom Lecture was presented this year by Stephen Cox – Head of Signalling Products at Alstom. Stephen described the developments of new technologies in railway signalling and the challenges faced by developers in this area.

Whilst the world of technology moves on at a very rapid pace railway signalling is sometimes perceived as slower to adopt new technology. This lecture looked at some of the reasons why this is the case and how these challenges may be overcome. It will focus on the development and introduction of signalling technologies over the past 40 years and look at the current “state of the art” before considering some of the opportunities and challenges that will have to be faced if signalling technology is to keep pace with the modern trend of “quick to market short product lifespans”.
