David Horton (Chief Mechanical Engineer) and Julian Fletcher (Technology Development Manager) both form Great Western Railway (GWR) will present a lecture on the GWR Fast Charge Battery Train Trial.
This hybrid lecture will take place on Thursday 12th November 2026 starting at 18:00 at the Derby Conference Centre and will be broadcast live on Zoom. Joining details for Zoom will be emailed to Members prior to the event.
This trial has successfully demonstrated the use of a battery train and a dedicated automatic ground-based charging system in a commercial environment for the first time in the UK. This lecture will tell the story of the trial, the design and development of the system, the lessons learned through the testing programme, the benefits of the ground-based system compared to alternative charging methods and sets out a vision for how the technology may be rolled out more widely in the UK and as a potential export opportunity.
