The Society’s December lecture was presented by Daniel Liddle (Engineering Manager) and Matt Corran (Senior Project Engineer) at Loram UK on the development and construction of their first On Track Machines built in the UK.

Loram UK is proud to be delivering the company’s first-ever new build rail grinding machines manufactured in the UK — the RGX and RGC — from its Derby RTC Depot. These landmark projects represent a major milestone in Loram’s global growth strategy and the strengthening of its engineering and manufacturing capability within the UK.
Designed by Loram’s US engineering team, the RGX and RGC machines combine decades of proven grinding expertise with the latest innovations in control, diagnostics, and automation. The builds, currently underway in Derby, demonstrate seamless collaboration between Loram’s US and UK engineering divisions — uniting American design with British manufacturing, system integration, and validation excellence.
The RGC will be the first Loram grinding machine to be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS), aligning with the UK’s digital signalling strategy. The RGC also showcases Loram’s global engineering capability, with its initial build phase completed in the United States before being transferred to Derby for final assembly, testing, and commissioning. This international collaboration leverages Loram US’s established supplier network while embedding key stages of manufacture within the UK.
By contrast, the RGX is being built entirely in the United Kingdom, supported by a predominantly UK-based supply chain. This approach strengthens local industry partnerships and underlines Loram’s commitment to developing a sustainable, high-value manufacturing base within Derby.
The RGC is scheduled to enter service in April 2026, followed by the RGX in May 2026. Together, these projects represent a defining achievement for Loram UK — the first full new-build programmes delivered from its Derby facility — establishing it as a cornerstone for future innovation, advanced manufacturing, and technology integration within the global rail industry.”
