In the first lecture of the 2023-24 season, Steve Hoather presented some recollections about the introduction of HSTs onto the East Coast Mainline and described some of the problems the trains experienced and how these were resolved. He also described why some of the major issues had not previously been experienced on the earlier Western Region fleet.

Steve Hoather was the HST Section Leader in the Regional Mechanical & Electrical Engineer’s Office at York during the introduction of the trains in the period 1977-1980.
