Past Video Lecture: Rail Information Systems – Signal Sighting

The first lecture of the 2021/2022 season was presented by Simon Perkin (Digital Services – Portfolio and Engagement Manager) from SNC-Lavalin. The Zoom lecture took place on Thursday 16th September 2021. To view this lecture please log into the Members area.

Simon described how The GB railway relies on a multitude of computer information systems to plan, operate and maintain the railway. Historically they have tended to be isolated silos of information but in recent years the GB rail industry has made substantial progress integrating systems and making information more readily accessible to deliver process efficiencies and promote innovation.

This presentation focused on an information system implemented by SNC-Lavalin Atkins in 2014 for Network Rail, specifically to ‘digitalise’ the signal sighting process. Signal sighting brings together infrastructure, rolling stock and people from scheme design through to rail operations. The presentation explored why signal sighting is important, how this information system has added value to the rail industry through regular enhancements and innovations including in-flight proof of concepts relating to digital railway.
